Ice Angling

Let’s try to angle ice. You wonder how?

You can not only experiment with ice in the winter. You can do this experiment in the summer, the winter and all the other seasons, because ice is not only available in the summer. If you put a bit of water in the fridge you can create your own ice. And this is what we need for our experiment:

1 pencil
1 strand of wool
1 glass, filled with very cold water but not frozen
1 ice cube
Salt

So let us try. Put the ice cube really carefully in the cup with cold water. Otherwise the ice cube might brake and you can not use it anymore. Now you have to take the pencil and the stand of wool because you want to have your pencil-stand of wool angle. So roll the wool around the pencil and leave 5 centimeters free, it must hang down. Afterwards you put the end of your angle  on the surface of the ice cube. And now comes already the last step. You put some salt on the surface of the ice cube and wait for some minutes. You must be able to pull the ice cube with your angle out of the water because, as you may have seen, the strand of wool is frozen at the ice cube and they are now connected

Why?

You have put some salt on the surface of the ice cube when the strand of wool was also on the surface of the ice cube. You may have seen that people use salt in the winter to defreeze ice. This is the same procedure here. If you put the salt on the ice cube the ice cube melts a bit and the salt dissolves in the water of the glass. The strand of wool sinks a little bit in the ice cube. As you read, the ice is now in the water and the cold ice cube starts to freeze again with the difference that the strand of wool is now inside the ice cube.
The energy that is needed for this melting procedure comes from the Salt-Ice-Miixture. This mixture looses a bit of energy as warmth and the temperature is under 0 degrees.
